Just a few days ago, we discussed how Google updated the Play Games app to feature an ‘instant’ game at the top of the home page that would be hand-picked and swapped out each week. Welp, this week that game is not in instant game, but rather a regular game you can download. This must have been something we misinterpreted. Either way, this week’s featured game is Galaxy Attack: Alien Shooter!
While it may not look like much and it certainly won’t be for everyone, I guess I sometimes forget that bullet hell style galaga shooters like this could be pretty fun. Galaxy Attack has you dragging around a ship and firing infinitely. While I personally am not a fan of a ship that never stops shooting as I think it’s a bit immersion breaking, I can see the logic. You’re faced with waves and waves of enemies that don’t necessarily die in just a few hits, so it may be the best design choice.
I can’t help but notice the really good sound in this game. From the bullets, to the epic music and especially the gun reloading sound, the most time, I think, was put into the audio. It has an energy system where you can’t play anymore after you run out and you’ll have to wait some time before your energy restores, but they start you off with 100 and each round costs 5 or so to play. I guess this is the modern version of putting coins in at the arcade? I’ve always really hated energy systems, but we’ll discuss that another day as I have a lot to say about it.
Anyways, there are various ship and weapon upgrades and a star map where you progress to new levels and different planets on and there seems to be a story line of some sort where you don’t quite defeat the boss at the end of the tutorial and he say something to the effect of the classic “You may have won this time, but that won’t be the last you see of me!”
There’s an endless mode, multiple ships to unlock, multiple difficulties to play the game on and even PVP, but I didn’t play long enough to unlock it. They also have what they call quests which are basically just achievement milestones to get to in order to get some coins. Overall, I’m not a big fan of this game as I see them implementing a lot of shady micro transaction practices, but if you’re into arcade shooters, you should at least try it out. Enough quality was put in to say it’s worth a quick download.
