SteamDolls is a steampunk inspired metroidvania game with a grimy touch of brutality according to its official description. To me, it looks like a side scrolling Dishonored – not a bad thing. You character has a sort of ‘hidden’ blade that’s on the top of his wrist, kind of like Eivor in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, but you use it a lot more. Smashing its way through the Kickstarter goal, the developers – The Shady Gentlemen set for themselves, they’ve partnered with publisher Top Hat Studios is bringing it directly to the Nintendo Switch digitally with a limited run physical release partnership with 1st Press.
The story seems to revolve around some sort of conspiracy theory in a shadows-to-light tale as you must ‘expose the sins of the world’. What many will notice in the trailer below is that the voice over is done by David Hayter, the long time original voice actor (and only one depending on who you ask) of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid series. He will play the part of The Whisper. (Christopher Randolph, the voice actor for ‘Otacon’ in the Metal Gear series is also in the game)
You will play the part of The Whisper – a cunning thief and anarchist. Maybe you are tasked with ending the world which consumed all of their fossil fuels and began to use a new superconductive material in its place in order to survive. It’s transformed them into these so called SteamDolls – mindless, cruel monsters who are no longer considered human. Perhaps you are sent to destroy them because they are now considered abominations which should have died with their original fuel source. We’ll have to wait and see.
“When fossil fuels were depleted, it was time for a change. But it never came. The discovery of a new superconductive material made sure the cycle never broke.”
This is the way their world ends, not with a bang but a whisper.
The gameplay allows you multiple approaches including all out attacking enemies or sticking to the shadows and performing stealth but violent assassinations. The devs seem to have tried to focus pretty heavily on the brutal aspect of the game’s theme because some of these takedowns are pretty gruesome.
Being that this is a metroidvania, you will go back and forth in a massive 2D steampunk city and access previous areas you’ve passed by once you gain the skills or upgrades needed to unlock them for exploration.
Inspired by games like Castlevania and Hollow Knight. Nourished by the fury of Dead Cells and the gloom of Bloodborne. Lose yourself in a labyrinthine city, full of secrets and madness.
There will also be many dangerous and disgusting mutated monsters including one mutated by a bio-mechanical virus. Fun. SteamDolls still has most of its Kickstarter time left to go even though it’s more than broken through its goal so there’s no release date yet. You can try a concept demo of the game over on Steam, but it doesn’t represent the full and final release. What do you think about SteamDolls? Please discuss in the comments section below!
