Spellbreak is a fantasy-action themed RPG battle royale. It’s basically Fortnight for those who prefer to shoot fireballs and other spells at enemies as opposed to guns. Switch owners will be happy to know that it just received a trailer showing that they will be able to get their hands on it soon!
In Spellbreak, your goal is to become the ultimate Battlemage and dominate the Hollow Lands. You are not tied to specific classes, but rather you can build completely unique character combinations and spells to battle it out against your friends and foes. You see, the game is a battle royale, but it relies on several traditional RPG and MMORPG elements to make it feel unique. There are even quests which you can complete during the round to progress your character’s class and powers.
One of the things that caught my eye early on in the game was that you can combine spells to create new effects in the environment. You can combine them by yourself or even combine your spell with an enemy’s spell. For example, If your opponent creates a a wind tornado, you can shoot a fireball into it to create a fire tornado to do tons of damage to whoever gets in its way. You can also do things like shooting a fireball into some toxic sludge to create an explosion. My favorite combo that I’ve seen so far is hitting a launched boulder with an ice lance to freeze it into an iceberg that can smash your enemies!
For someone like me who is obsessed with swords and magic type games versus first person shooters with guns, Spellbreak will be a fresh and innovative take on the battle royale genre. It will be free-to-play on the Nintendo Switch as is the tradition of many multiplayer games these days. It’s set to release before the end of 2020, but we don’t yet have an exact date, but stay tuned in to Gaming Unboxed for all the latest!
